McPIFP Goal for Week #31

Goal: Labor Day -- Look Ahead!

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. (U.S. Department of Labor)

Wow! In today's economy... is this an incongruous holiday or what?! How many of us know at least 3 people who are unemployed right now? And for those who are still employed, I'm sure you've never been more thankful for your job and have complained less about it in the last year than ever before! Fortunately, this is just a season and we, as the American people, WILL bounce back from this. Already... how many people do you know who are making the decision to go back to school? To finish their college education? To do something they love? I can name 5 just off the top of my head-- not including myself.

For those of you that don't know, I made the decision to go back to school to finish my elementary education degree, AFTER getting released from my sales job. Obviously, the transportation industry was one of the first ones hit so I was one of the first ones released. For me, it was a blessing and a release to actually go back to school and do what I wanted to do--teach! I see many of my friends and peers doing the same thing right now... going back to school to fulfill their dreams. It's a wonderful sight and such a liberating feeling! Even when our economy is at its lowest; and when our nation is as unstable as ever; and unemployment is at its all-time highest.... NOTHING can stop us from making something out of nothing, and making our dreams come true. =)

For this week's goal, no matter if you're employed or not, I encourage you to LOOK AHEAD! Have faith and a hope that things will turn around, for "faith is the substance of things hoped for!". Our Nation will endure and we will get through this. Don't be gripped by fear and uncertainty. Instead, PRAY and seek the Lord's direction for your life. He doesn't want you floating around aimlessly with no direction or guidance... He LOVES you and will find a way to be glorified out of any situation... just as He has in my life. =)

... but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing:
forgetting the past and looking forward
to what lies ahead.
Philippians 3:13
I love you all and hope you have a great week!

McPIFP Goal for Week #30

Goal: Compliment someone

There is no effect more disproportionate to its cause
than the happiness bestowed by a small compliment.
-Robert Brault
This week's goal is quite a simple one.. at least for me. I can remember as far back as junior high, when I was only 13 years old, feeling the need to tell people how I feel. This can, of course, not always be a good thing but I've learned that along the way as well. ;) I've also always felt the need to compliment others when I see something I like.... not just thinking it and telling someone else, but I've always made sure to go right up to that person, or send a card/email, and let them know what I like about them. I've always thought in my head, "well, if someone liked my outfit or liked my hair or the way I smell or the way I handled a certain situation... then I would surely wanna know about it!" So since that thinking entered my head.. I've always made sure to give others compliments, knowing how much, I myself, appreciate it. Seriously though... who doesn't like to hear something good about themselves?
I figure paying a compliment to someone each day is a pretty simple and effective way of paying it forward. If you make someone feel good just by telling them that you like their shoes or they look handsome today.. then think of how that person will feel! If that person feels amazing and on top of the world from just a simple compliment, he/she is more than likely gonna want to spread that feeling around! It just all makes so much sense! =)
I hope you all are having a wonderful week! I'm sorry this is late, but you still have 4 more days to implement this goal.... OR... you can implement it for the rest of your life!
Love you all!
Mandi =)

McPIFP Goal for Week #29

"Anyone? Anyone?"..... I'm sure you all remember this guy from 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'... how could you forget, right?! And I'm pretty sure he was in the 'Clear Eyes' commercials as well if I remember correctly.

Well, for those of you who don't know, his real name is Ben Stein. Stein attained early success as a speechwriter for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. But later, he entered the entertainment field where he became an actor, comedian, and even an Emmy Award-winning game show host! He is most famous for his humorously monotonous voice in film and television roles, but still continued to write. As you continue reading, you will see Ben Stein's last article that was published back in 2004 for E! Online. From what little research I've done, it seems that this article has been circulating through email since it was first published and thanks to a very dear friend, I just now received it. =)

After reading this powerful article, I really won't need to set a goal for this week, because it should be obvious in Stein's writing. And again... it's not a goal just for the week, but for life! I hope you all have a great week! Much Love!

Ben Stein's Last Column...August 9, 2004
How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today's World?
As I begin to write this, I "slug" it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is "FINAL," and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even recall when I started. I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end. It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as a person and the world's change have overtaken it.
On a small scale, Morton's [famous restaurant which was often frequented by Hollywood stars], while better than ever, no longer attracts as many stars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves and definitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, and we had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendid talk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendor in the Grass was a super movie. But Morton's is not the star galaxy it once was, though it probably will be again.
Beyond that, a bigger change has happened. I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.
How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives in insane luxury really be a star in today's world, if by a "star" we mean someone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model? Real stars are not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches or getting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while they have Vietnamese girls do their nails. They can be interesting, nice people, but they are not heroes to me any longer.

A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit, Iraq. He could have been met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets. Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world. A real star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to a road north of Baghdad. He approached it, and the bomb went off and killed him.. A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day, is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with a piece of unexploded ordnance on a street near where he was guarding a station. He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as it exploded. He left a family desolate in California and a little girl alive in Baghdad.
The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even after two of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered and stripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists. We put couples with incomes of $100 million a year on the covers of our magazines. The noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.
I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poor values, and I do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending that who is eating at Morton's is a big subject.
There are plenty of other stars in the American firmament....the policemen and women who go off on patrol in South Central and have no idea if they will return alive. The orderlies and paramedics who bring in people who have been in terrible accidents and prepare them for surgery, the teachers and nurses who throw their whole spirits into caring for autistic children, the kind men and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards.
Think of each and every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World Trade Center as the towers began to collapse. Now you have my idea of a real hero.
We are not responsible for the operation of the universe, and what happens to us is not terribly important. God is real, not a fiction, and when we turn over our lives to Him, he takes far better care of us than we could ever do for ourselves. In a word, we make ourselves sane when we fire ourselves as the directors ofthe movie of our lives and turn the power over to Him.

I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters.
This is my highest and best use as a human. I can put it another way. Years ago, I realized I could never be as great an actor as Olivier or as good a comic as Steve Martin--or Martin Mull or Fred Willard--or as good an economist as Samuelson or Friedman, or as good a writer as Fitzgerald. Or even remotely close to any of them.
But I could be a devoted father to my son, husband to my wife and, above all, a good son to the parents who had done so much for me. This came to be my main task in life. I did it moderately well with my son, pretty well with my wife and well indeed with my parents (with my sister's help). I cared for and paid attention to them in their declining years. I stayed with my father as he got sick, went into extremis, into a coma, and then entered immortality with my sister and me reading him the Psalms.
This was the only point at which my life touched the lives of the soldiers in Iraq or the fire fighters in New York. I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to help others He has placed in my path.
This is my highest and best use as a human.

McPIFP Goal for Week #28

Back to School We go!

So yeah.... I apologize for not blogging last week. Needless to say, I've been so caught up in all of the back-to-school events that my blog unfortunately slipped through the cracks. I know, right? Shame on me! :( I'm getting back in a routine, so I'll do better!

But as you all know.... I, myself, am on my way back-to-school in the form of a Student Teacher! This past week and 1/2, I've been helping my cooperating teacher set up her classroom and I've been attending all of the PD (Professional Development) meetings right along with her. It has been a wonderful experience and I'm soooo excited about this school year! I'm doing a student teaching internship, so I get to be in the classroom all year and then will switch over to handling all of the classroom duties in January. During this first semester, I'll also continue to attend classes at Graceland.

In my recent experience, or "behind the scenes" of what a classroom teacher goes through, I've learned that when times are tough, it's the Educational industry that suffers the most. All of these teachers are spending more and more money out of their pockets in order to have supplies for their kiddos; they're giving up their last two weeks of summer in order to spend time disussing how they can become better teachers; how they can raise test scores; how they can meet the "needs" of the student... be it hunger, stability, affection, etc; For some, their class sizes are in the upper 20's... 25 to 28 kiddos per class, because the districts can't afford to hire anymore teachers; they're working from 8am to 7pm in order to make their classrooms as cozy as possible for the new little kindergarteners who will soon be arriving.

I could go on and on about how these teachers and principals are sacrificing their own family time and finances for the sake of their students. In today's economy, it's never been more clear to me that we teachers do this job, because we BELIEVE in your child. Now more than ever... when times are tough and school districts are predicting for it to be worse next year... I am SO thankful that I have chosen this industry. Not only do the children in today's society need us, but the families need us as well. Take heart knowing that your child's classroom teacher is there because he/she already loves your child and BELIEVES in them. =)

For this week's goal, I'd like for us to take the time to bless your teacher. This year's school supply list was very meager compared to what your teachers actually need. If you do not have a school-aged child, I'm sure you know of a school near you that could use your donations. If not, then contact me and I can tell you the name of my school. =)
Here's a list of some items that would be helpful to your teachers:
  • clorox/disinfecting wipes
  • hand sanitizer
  • supply/school boxes
  • dry-erase markers
  • washable crayola markers
  • snacks (check with the teacher on this one, just in case some of the students have food allergies)

I've also included a link to a video clip that I was introduced to in one of my meetings. Watch this amazingly touching video and see for yourself why teachers do what we do. =) Introducing: Dalton Sherman from Dallas, TX.

Have a blessed week! Love you all! =)

McPIFP Goal for Week #27

Goal: Celebrate "International Friendship Day"

A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg,
even though he knows that you are slightly cracked.
-- Bernard Meltzer.

I don't know about you all, but I have been abundantly blessed with an amazing group of friends who think I'm a good egg! Haha! =) I have friends I've known for 20+ years... girls that are more like sisters than my friends; I have friends of all ages.. young and old; I have friends I've met during some of the hardest times in my life; I have friends that are actually included within my family; I've even developed new friendships this year that I hope to last for a lifetime!

I absolutely LOVE and adore all of you! There have been times in my life where I'm not sure I would've made it in the right direction were it not for the love, faithfulness, and advice of my friends. I believe that just like our fur-babies... God has provided specific people in our lives to simply be a blessing to us, and to bring us joy. A friend is defined as, "one attached to another by affection and esteem". And yes... that is a perfectly good definition of the way I feel about my friends. I am very attached because I love you so very much! =)

Today is "International Friendship Day", which takes place on the first Sunday of August every year. This tradition began in the U.S. back in 1935, and on this day, people spend time with their friends and express their love for them. For this week's goal, I'd like for us to honor and express to our friends how much they mean to us. Here's some ideas of what you could do: buy a small gift-- chocolates, flowers, their favorite drink from Sonic, candies, etc.; or take them golfing; or take to dinner/lunch; or send a card or letter; or simply send a text message or make a phone call; make their favorite dessert; give a hug, etc. The point is to just let your friends know that you love them and appreciate them.... I guess it's kind of like Valentine's Day, but with your friends instead. =)

I was in Florida on vacation this past week, so I apologize for not getting a blog in. I hope you all have a FABULOUS FRIENDSHIP week!
Thank you to all of my amazing friends!
I am soooo blessed to have your love! XOXOXOXOX
Mandi =)

McPIFP Goal for Week #26

Goal: Stretch Your Faith

Enlarge your house; build an addition;
spread out your home! For you will soon be
bursting at the seams.
Isaiah 54:2

This week's goal happens to be a very personal revelation that I've recently experienced... it's been slowly building, but the truth--plain and simple--has finally made its impact! In other words... God's truth has finally set me free. =) Here's the story:

My whole life has been spent living in fear... not of death, or even failure, but I've spent my whole life in fear of truly LIVING! I've never tried anything "risky" or ever ventured out of my comfort zone for fear of what.. I have no idea. But I do know that the WORST feeling in the world for me is anticipation! I HATE anticpation and I HATE being out of my comfort zone where I'm not in control or feel prepared. This fear and mindset has crippled me. God has given me incredible talents and giftings. He's always provided pivotal opportunities for me to use these giftings to make a huge impact for His Kingdom; but because of my fear and inability to release control, I have missed out on these opportunities.

I never tried out for anything vocally/musically, because the anticipation scared me to death. I would think.... "No, I could never do that".... "Stuff like that doesn't happen to me..."; I quit playing basketball for the same reason-- fear of what others would think if I wasn't the "All-Star Mandi McMichael", like I had pretty much been my whole basketball career. Basketball came easy to me.... singing background vocals, or in a choir, came easy to me.... but as soon as things got challenging, or if I had to work harder, I would back out. If I didn't personally have control over the situation, I would quit. All those years, when things would get challenging... I didn't realize that it was the Lord trying to EXPAND my favor and blessings. He didn't want me singing background... He wanted me singing the lead; He didn't want me playing off the bench, He wanted me as the starting point guard (yes... point guard.. because that's what I was being groomed for at the time); He didn't want me to just play high school and college basketball.. He wanted to send me to the WNBA and play in the Olympics (Ha ha! I know... that's a stretch, but believe it or not, I had that dream!); He didn't just want me to have a few good friends... he wanted to bless me with an incredible multitude of BEST friends!; He doesnt just want me to be the usual classroom teacher, He wants me to be the "Teacher of the Year"!; He doesn't just want me to be the "Teacher of the Year", but he wants me to be the Principal of my own school! My point is that God provided me with many, many pivotal opportunities to step out in faith and accept bigger and greater blessings, but I was too scared to accept them. Obviously... That has most definitely changed. =)

In the above verse, it shows us God's vision for our lives. He doesn't want us just living the norm or status quo... His desire for us is to be great!! He wants us to expand our small mindsets, push aside the fears or doubts, and have FAITH that His favor is upon our lives. "For you will soon be bursting at the seams...." To me, that is a promise from our Heavenly Father who loves us and wants to bless us. Everthing in my life is so clear to me now. I can literally see every missed opportunity for greater favor that I chose not to accept, because of my inability to step out of my comfort zone. Literally. God's favor has always been upon my life and I've always known that, but my small mind could never understand the magnitude of that favor. Even when I chose not to listen to Him, or even when I was living in the "haze" of my failed marriage, He still blessed me. His favor was still upon my life and He was still providing opportunities for greatness.

Our Father loves us sooooo much! He wants us to make room in our minds for MORE! He wants us to expand and enlarge our visions! When those scary challenges come along, He wants us to step out in faith and accept those opportunities for greater favor.... because that's what they are. We just struggle wrapping our small minds around that magnitude of love. =) But it's there.. and our Father wants to bless us. If you take a look at great people, who have made a difference in our cultures and past cultures...athletes, musicians, pastors, teachers, explorers, activists, etc., you will see that they took risks. They had to step out of their comfort zones and just go for it! They didn't accept failure, but continuously overcame failures, by having faith and HOPING!

Faith is the substance of things hoped for (my current mantra).... whatever I hope to have happen, I must have faith. Here's how Joel Osteen describes it, "God works and operates by faith. You must believe first, and then you'll receive. Maybe you've been waiting on God to make a move, but God is waiting on you to stretch your faith."

This week..... stop waiting on God to make a move! Do your part.... by stretching your faith, accepting those opportunities for more favor, and then give Him all the glory! He IS faithful!

I look forward to hearing some of your testimonies!
I love you all and hope you have a great week! =)

Introducing: Pollie the Pug Fairy

Pollie the Pug Fairy makes her first debut as we visited my Grandma in the nursing home! The Pug Fairy's sole purpose is to "sprinkle" happiness to everyone she encounters. But watch out... if you get too close, you might actually feel the sprinkles that come from her nose! Ha ha! She was a HUGE hit... not just by the residents, but also by the nurses and staff that worked there. Of course, Pollie has some anxiety issues, so she was in FULL snort-mode! You definitely couldn't miss her... either from the pink dress or because she sounded just like a PIG walking through the halls! It was a great experience and that was only Pollie's first visit. The Pug Fairy is excited to spread some more happiness as soon as possible!

I am firm believer that God gave us pets just because he loves us that much! They're meant to be loved on and spoiled.. and in return, they'll "worship" the ground we walk on! In a dog, you can find unconditional love! But I've found a new "calling" for Pollie's purpose... and that's to make a difference--to make people HAPPY and laugh and escape their hurts/depressions-- just for a few minutes while they admire the fat little Pug dressed in a princess costume! It was a revelation for me as I visited the nursing home and I hope you had equally meaningful experiences in whatever you decided to do.

More to come from Pollie the Pug Fairy.... I'll keep you posted on her ministry! =)
